Post Offices and Rural Services

Sadly, Thriplow Post Office has had a turbulent time. Residents of Whittlesford, Sawston and Duxford should consider themselves lucky. No, not lucky, for all villages of a respectable size should have a Post Office and/or a village shop!

Since Mrs Thatcher came to power, Market Forces have been applied to every aspect of life. Labour have carried on where the Conservatives left off. I don't believe in policy based on dogma. Common sense tells us that a local Post Office is an essential service and as such should be part of a national network available equally and freely to all. Some essential services may inevitably need support by national or local governemt. In the case of post offices: through direct or indirect subsidies or through increased national postal rates, or simply allowing Post Offices to offer a wider range of services to make them more profitable.

Liberal Democrat policy is to increasse the range of services Post Offices can offer, such as making Council payments, thus aiding profitability and viability. We aim to encourage further multi-use pubs and village stores through grant aid and Council Tax rebate. We will support development of rural employment through farm diversification, tourism, farm shops, markets and other sustainable local trade.
