Council Efficieny and Democracy

Liberal Democrats will ensure that the District Council is run prudently, with priority given to direct services. Accountability will be bought to any partnership groups spending taxpayers' money, and Council Tax rises will be kept as low as possible whilst preserving services.

Inspectors' Report

Corporate Governance Inspectors have delivered some criticism of the Conservative administration of South Cambs District Council. Whilst conceding some good work has been done the report is not that good for the residents of South Cambridgeshire. "Improvements and engagement have not gone far enough" and "there is still a long way to go".

Liberal Democrats will deliver a more accountable and engaged council. Just look at Cambridgeshire County Council, where the Conservative administration railroaded through the MisGuided Bus scheme despite massive local opposition. A number of Conservative councillors had their majorities slashed at the last County elections in many of the wards affected by the scheme. At both the District and County level, the Conservatives aren't listening enough.

Liberal Democrats will review the times of Council meetings and bring greater transparency to Council democracy, assisting residents to become more involved in local government and providing more opportunities for public participation and challenge.
